What to Expect in a Therapy Consultation

Once you have made the decision to come to therapy, the next step is to find the right therapist for you. Our initial consultation is a brief, 15-minute chat. It is a good opportunity for you to get a sense of what it may be like working with a particular therapist. Part of the therapist’s role is to ensure that you are receiving the treatment that is appropriate to your needs, so you may be asked to share what specifically has brought you to therapy or what your goals or aspirations for treatment are. Based on your feedback from our initial consultation, the therapist may offer some ideas on how we can work together.

An initial consultation is also an opportunity for you to address concerns or ask any questions you have for the therapist. Some questions to consider may pertain to the fee, insurance coverage, frequency and duration of sessions, the therapists’ availability and experience, or what you might expect during the sessions generally. The process overall should be made as transparent as possible to you, so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to move forward at West Therapy Group.

Therapy is a wonderful gift you can give yourself. It is a journey of self-discovery that can open up new perspectives on your life experiences and your relationships with those closest to you. It asks only that you challenge yourself, to experience a range of emotions, to express your true self, with your therapist as a trusted guide throughout the entire process. We encourage you to take the time to explore the possibilities with us.
